Foundation Learning Community

100 days
On the 9th of August the Foundation Community celebrated 100 days of school with the theme ‘100 Days Brighter!’ Children were invited to dress up in bright, rainbow and fluorescent colours. The day was filled with a fashion parade, a reflection on the first 100 days of learning, maths activities involving the number 100 and decorating chocolate cupcakes with their Year 5 Buddies.

School Concert
The Foundation students were very excited to participate in their first St.Columba’s school concert!

LG 1 performed ‘Under The Sea’ from The Little Mermaid and LG 2 performed a melody of songs from ‘Trolls’. Lots of learning, practising and fun was involved. It was wonderful to see their confidence and big smiles when performing on stage.

Book Week Incursion
On Monday the 29th of August, F - Year 2 had an incursion from ‘Perform! Education’.

Students were “immersed into the storytelling and interaction with the books featured from the CBCA 2022 shortlist woven into an engaging, original narrative filled with music, adventure and intrigue!” (Perform! Education, 2022).

Father's Day Liturgy
As part of the reflection in the Father’s Day Liturgy, Foundation students performed a song “Hey, Dad! I love you”. It was a beautiful performance and was so lovely to see the children looking and waving to their Dads/Special Person whilst performing.

Student Led Conferences
This term also saw our Foundation students sharing and celebrating their learning with their families in their very first Student Led Conference. The Foundation students did a fabulous job sharing their learning experiences with their families. We are so proud of them!

Year 1/2 Learning Community

What a wonderful term we have had in the 1/2 Community. Our participation in our sensational school concert was definitely a highlight but we can’t forget about our trip to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX where we explored the amazing world of prehistoric creatures and even watched a 3D movie!

We are very proud of the work the children have done in writing this term. Producing interesting and eye catching information reports as well as imaginative and well structured narratives which we have enjoyed sharing with each other as well as in Student Led Conversations.

The children have done a beautiful job reflecting on the different relationships we form with people during our RE unit and retold the story of Zacchaeus through storytelling, artwork and Godly play.

We look forward to a wonderful term 4. We hope the children enjoy a restful break.

Year 3/4 Learning Community

In Week 9 the 3/4 Learning Community enjoyed an experience provided through the Positive Start initiative, where each class engaged with Football Victoria for a 1 hour soccer clinic. Fun was had by all!

The 3/4 Learning Community joined with the rest of the school in coming together to celebrate Book Week 2022. We were lucky enough to have author Jodi Toering work with the students on “Show, Don’t Tell” which was a clinic where the students were encouraged to use more descriptive language in their writing.

In the 3/4 Learning Community we have studied Geology this term. To immerse ourselves we went for a walk to the Yarrawee Creek and Black Hill. We looked at how the Earth’s surface may have changed over time.

Year 5/6 Learning Community

What a hectic term it has been in 5/6!! Throughout the term, the students have been exposed to a variety of experiences and have had a great time! The number of sporting opportunities our students have had has been incredible, and seeing them succeed has been phenomenal.

Our students enjoyed visiting and hosting other Catholic schools on Friday mornings for a variety of activities such as basketball, table tennis, football, soccer, netball, and indoor games. We applaud our House Captains for organising these activities and equipment each week, well done!

The grade 5 students had an eye opening experience at St. Patrick’s College and Loreto College for their SEED day.

Woodwork, Technology and Science were some of the activities the students participated in at St. Pat’s.

Science, Performing Arts, Humanities and Home Economics were some of the activities the students participated in at Loreto.

Here is a list of some other wonderful celebrations from Term 3 in the 5/6 Community:

  • Some grade 5 students celebrated their Sacrament of the Eucharist. The 1/2 community made them a beautiful card to congratulate them.
  • Lu’s Dance Group performance was incredible!!
  • We shared several buddy lunches with our grade 5 students and their foundation friends.
  • The SWPB leaders organised a ‘Free Dress Day’ for Clonard House as they received the most affirmations for the term.
  • The Choir performed at the school concert and won an Honourable Mention at Royal South Street.
  • The senior students were incredibly excited to share their Science learning with all of the students from the different communities. Their audience was highly engaged in the interactive activities.
  • The 5/6 students finished their term with a maths fractions Amazing Race, where they displayed exceptional teamwork, problem solving and inclusive behaviours. This learning experience proved to be so positive and engaging, that we hope to use similar strategies in the future.

Performing Arts

Concert
Perhaps the biggest event of the term was our school concert - St Columba's went to the Movies! It was wonderful for our school to finally be able to perform in front of a live audience again... 3 years in the making! Thank you to our talented students and staff for their participation.

Choir
Our choir participated in the Royal South Street vocal competition this term. Not only did their beautiful singing and lovely presentation see them awarded both an Honourable Mention and the Adjudicator's Award, their patience, the respect they showed other choirs and their overall conduct made us all very proud!

Book Week

This year we celebrated 'Book Week' with a parade, an author visit and a performance around the theme "Dreaming with eyes open". Visiting author, Jodi Toering facilitated some amazing workshops based on her latest picture Story Book titled "Mallee Sky". Our parade was a wonderful opportunity for our favourite book characters to come to life. The teachers joined in the fun with some great costumes of their favourite characters. Thanks to all those who participated with such enthusiasm.
